We all must make a conscious decision to reflect on who we are and how we impact the world around us. Just like dieting isn't sustainable for long-term weight loss, neither is only choosing to lead in one or two aspects of our lives, or when we think someone is watching. That is precisely the challenge we must overcome because embracing leadership as a lifestyle creates greater endurance in life, more opportunities, allows us to be the best we can be, and enables us to elicit greatness from everyone around us. Not because we want to fail, but because it's hard work, and sometimes we unconsciously think that we deserve a break from all that effort (if we are even putting any in) - to simply catch our breath and "let go" for awhile. Marines understand that these traits apply to them 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year, not just while in uniform.īut, the hard truth is that we all daily fail at a life of leadership. I am a Marine, and I, like hundreds of thousands (perhaps millions now) of other Marines, learned the Marine Corps leadership traits through the acronym, "JJ DID TIE BUCKLE" - justice, judgment, decisiveness, initiative, dependability, tact, integrity, enthusiasm, bearing, unselfishness, courage, knowledge, loyalty, and endurance. Embracing leadership as a lifestyle is the only way we can truly become our best selves.
If I am gracious at work, I should be gracious to my neighbors if I am positively impacting my organization, then I should do the same for my community. It does not permit a person to be compassionate to an employee, but utterly rude to a server in a restaurant act with integrity in the office, but cheat on a spouse or be attentive to someone who can help us, but not to our children. Living leadership as a lifestyle requires the best of us, at all times. This approach robs us all of the opportunity to weave leadership into every facet of our human experience. The overwhelming majority of books, articles, and executive education programs approach leadership as a stand-alone topic, discussed without the context of how it actually fits into our entire lives, not simply our professional lives. Walk into any bookstore on the street or at any airport and you can find shelves and shelves of books on what it means to be a leader, how to become a leader, how to deal with leaders, how to become a better leader, how to lead up, how to lead down, how to lead across, and so on, and so on, and so on.
There is no dearth of literature on the topic of leadership.
